Obituary of James Henry Gleeson
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Henry Gleeson, fondly known as 'Jay' to many who knew him. Jay left this world Monday, April 10th, 2023 at his home in Berlin, NJ at the age of 70.
Born on March 2nd, 1953, his talents were obvious and vast from a young age. He was gifted musically, learning to play everything from the coronet to the electric guitar to percussions, but his creative passions weren't limited to music. Even as a young boy, he was impressing adults with his artwork.
Pursuing his love and passion for creativity meant following his heart. Having previously been studying biology and pre-med (with a minor in art) at Rutgers University Camden, Jay ultimately recognized that medicine was not his calling. Once the choice was made, it wasn't long before he was honing his craft and building his business' success. In 1976 he started American Signs & Designs, specializing in creating distinctively designed, quality signage. Jay would continue creating beautiful and unique signs for local businesses and individuals for the rest of his life. His work was known for its hand-crafted artistic flair, and he gained a reputation locally as one of the best sign makers in the area. He was, after all, the "Sign-tist".
Jay's smile & laugh could light up a room. He loved a joke or to tell a good story. He thrived in the outdoors and treasured spending time on the water, relishing any opportunity to spend a day on a boat. He particularly took joy in fishing and then preparing his catches to share with family and friends. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need and was deeply loved. Jay was also heavily involved in local community groups. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends.
Jay is survived by his son James "Gus" Gleeson and daughter Sarah Gleeson (Michael England); sisters Barbara Gleeson and Linda Abel (Bob Abel).
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation with the family on May 13, 2023 from 9:30AM to 10:30AM at the Ashland Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 33 E. Evesham Rd., Voorhees NJ 08043. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Ashland Church at the address above would be appreciated. Arrangements under the direction of the COSTANTINO-PRIMO FUNERAL HOME, BERLIN NJ.
