Obituary of Joel M. McGuckin

It is with great sorrow that the family of Joel Martin McGuckin, of Waterford Works, announces his passing on February 13, 2022 at Virtua Hospital as he was comforted by his loving wife.

A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Joel was 68 years old; born on April 17, 1953 in Camden, NJ. The son of Francis A. McGuckin and Florence A. McGuckin (née Schriver), both deceased, Joel was one of 15 children in his family. In addition to his parents, Joel is predeceased by his brothers Frank, John, Mark and Brian, as well as his sisters Kathleen and Susan. He is survived by his siblings Florence (Joseph Hogan), Mary (wife of Frank), Mary Ellen (Edward DeCaro), Dan (Sharon), Gregory, Theresa, Monica (Bill Schramm), Stephen, and Michael (Rebecca) and by loving in-laws, nieces, nephews and a host of longtime friends.

Joel went to Camden Catholic High School and Glassboro State College. He graduated from Villanova University with an M.Ed. and continued his education at Widener University working toward his Doctorate. Joel was a teacher for 30 years, retiring from Edgewood/Winslow Twp High School as an administrator. He also taught education courses at both Camden County College and Rowan University. He loved teaching and making a difference in his students’ lives. Joel enjoyed cooking and spending time with his family. He especially adored his grandchildren, always helping them with their education. Joel had a passion for sports, specifically college football and lacrosse. Joel loved fishing, though he didn’t catch many, and he enjoyed a good game of golf with his brothers.

He married his longtime love,  E. Karen Genung, in June of 1978, and they celebrated 43 years of marriage. They were blessed with four daughters: Alyson married to John Eger with two girls, Victoria and Samantha; Brigette married to Kevin Mauger with two children, Madilyn and Kevin Jr.; Erin with three children, Hailee, Sabrina and Noah; and Lauren. Joel touched many lives and will be deeply missed.
